Oakie, the Little Oak Tree That Didn't Die

Description

This is a true story about a young oak tree that was not growing well but was saved from destruction and survived to be a beautiful healthy tree.

In the 7 Habits series, international bestselling author Stephen R. Covey showed us how to become as effective as it is possible to be. In his long-awaited new book, THE 8th HABIT, he opens up an entirely new dimension of human potential, and shows us how to achieve greatness in any position and any venue. All of us, Covey says, have within us the means for greatness. To tap into it is a matter of finding the right balance of four human attributes: talent, Oakie, the Little Oak Tree That Didn't Die download PDF need, conscience and passion. At the nexus of these four attributes is what Covey calls voice - the unique, personal significance we each possess. Covey exhorts us all to move beyond effectiveness into the realm of greatness - and he shows us how to do so, by engaging our strengths and locating our powerful, individual voices. Why do we need this new habit? Because we have entered a new era in human history. The world is a profoundly different place than when THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE was originally published in 1989. The challenges and complexity we face today are of a different order of magnitude.

The Wisdom of Andrew Carnegie as Told to Napoleon Hill

Description

Previously published as How to Raise Your Own Salary The books written by Dr. Napoleon Hill have inspired millions of people in all parts of the world, and the principles Dr. Hill discovered are as practical today as when he had his first interview with Andrew Carnegie in 1908. Reading this book will inspire you to discover the great benefits from Hill's conversations with the great industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who came to the United States from Scotland and began working as a thirteen year old lad at wages of $1.20 per week. The success formula presented in The Wisdom of Andrew Carnegie as Told to Napoleon Hill will prove to you that Whatever the mind can CONCEIVE AND BELIEVE, the mind can ACHIEVE!

In the first two Immortal Beloved novels, 450-year-old ex-party girl Nastasya Crowe spends five months at River's Edge, a rehab for immortals with troubled pasts. In between uncovering her family's epic magickal history and flirting with Reyn, a heartbreakingly hot Viking wonder boy, Nastasya finally learns that being good is a choice within her power. Just as she's starting to truly change, she discovers that someone is killing immortals around the world and that River's Edge and her new friends may be the next targets. The agents of Supernatural Protection & Investigations (SPI) know that fighting evil is a full-time job, especially when a new designer drug with mind-blowing side effects hits the streets... Description

In his landmark work, The Great Good Place, Ray Oldenburg identified, portrayed, and promoted those third places. Now, more than ten years after the original publication of that book, the time has come to celebrate the many third places that dot the American landscape and foster civic life. Among the establishments profiled are a shopping center in Seattle, a three-hundred-year-old tavern in Washington, D.C., a garden shop in Amherst, Massachusetts, a coffeehouse in Raleigh, North Carolina, a bookstore in Traverse City, Michigan, and a restaurant in San Francisco.

In this imaginative novel, Neal Shusterman explores questions of life, death, and what just might lie in between." The Quantum Thief

Description

Jean le Flambeur gets up in the morning and has to kill himself before his other self can kill him first. Just another day in the Dilemma Prison. Rescued by the mysterious Mieli and her flirtatious spacecraft, Jean is taken to the Oubliette, the Moving City of Mars, where time is a currency, memories are treasures, and a moon-turned-singularity lights the night. Meanwhile, investigator Isidore Beautrelet, called in to investigate the murder of a chocolatier, finds himself on the trail of an arch-criminal, a man named le Flambeur....Indeed, in his many lives, the entity called Jean le Flambeur has been a thief, a confidence artist, a posthuman mind-burgler, and more. His origins are shrouded in mystery, but his deeds are known throughout the Heterarchy, from breaking into the vast Zeusbrains of the Inner System to stealing rare Earth antiques from the aristocrats of Mars. In his last exploit, he managed the supreme feat of hiding the truth about himself from the one person in the solar system hardest to hide from: himself. Now he has the chance to regain himself in all his power in exchange for finishing the one heist he never quite managed."The Quantum Thief" is a breathtaking joyride through the solar system several centuries hence, a world of marching cities, ubiquitous public-key encryption, people who communicate via shared memory, and a race of hyper-advanced humans who originated as an MMORPG guild. But for all its wonders, "The Quantum Thief" is also a story powered by very human motives of betrayal, jealousy, and revenge. It is a stunning debut. One of "Library Journal"'s Best SF/Fantasy Books of 2011"

Adaptation to Climate Change: From Resilience to Transformation

Description

The impacts of climate change are already being felt. Learning how to live with these impacts is a priority for human development. In this context, it is too easy to see adaptation as a narrowly defensive task - protecting core assets or functions from the risks of climate change. A more profound engagement, which sees climate change risks as a product and driver of social as well as natural systems, and their interaction, is called for. Adaptation to Climate Change argues that, without care, adaptive actions can deny the deeper political and cultural roots that call for significant change in social and political relations if human vulnerability to climate change associated risk is to be reduced. This book presents a framework for making sense of the range of choices facing humanity, structured around resilience (stability), transition (incremental social change and the exercising of existing rights) and transformation (new rights claims and changes in political regimes). The resilience-transition-transformation framework is supported by three detailed case study chapters. These also illustrate the diversity of contexts where adaption is unfolding, from organizations to urban governance and the national polity. This text is the first comprehensive analysis of the social dimensions to climate change adaptation. Clearly written in an engaging style, it provides detailed theoretical and empirical chapters and serves as an invaluable reference for undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in climate change, geography and development studies.
